긴장감이 감도는 권력의 충돌 장소
The Convent of St Gall, a perfect example of a great Carolingian monastery, was, from the 8th century to its secularization in 1805, one of the most important in Europe. Its library is one of the richest and oldest in the world and contains precious manuscripts such as the earliest-known architectural plan drawn on parchment. From 1755 to 1768, the conventual area was rebuilt in Baroque style. The cathedral and the library are the main features of this remarkable architectural complex, reflecting 12 centuries of continuous activity.
장크트 갈렌의 수도원은 7세기 초에 아일랜드의 수도자 갈루스가 알프스 숲 속에 작은 암자를 세움으로써 시작되었다. 이 수도원의 최고 전성기는 9~10세기의 중세, 그리고 17~18세기의 바로크, 로코코 시대였다. 특히 이 곳의 도서관은 중세 이후의 수많은 필사본과 독일어로 쓰여진 최초의 필사본을 소장하고 있는 것으로 유명하다. 종교 개혁의 혼란기에도 명맥을 이어온 이 수도원은 온갖 어려움 속에서도 문화유산을 보호해 오늘날에 전하고 있다. 수도원에는 바로크 시대의 귀중한 원고와 초기 건축 설계 도면 및 양피지 문서 등이 소장되어 있다. 페터 툼의 지도로 1765년에 완성된 도서관은 쪽매붙임 세공으로 이루어진 화려한 방은 현존하는 로코코 양식의 건축물 중 가장 아름다운 것으로 꼽힌다.

유럽 최대의 고대 빙하 지형
This is the most glaciated part of the Alps, containing Europe''s largest glacier and a range of classic glacial features such as U-shaped valleys, cirques, horn peaks and moraines. It provides an outstanding geological record of the uplift and compression that formed the High Alps. The diversity of flora and wildlife is represented in a range of Alpine and sub-Alpine habitats and plant colonization in the wake of retreating glaciers provides an outstanding example of plant succession. The impressive vista of the North Wall of the High Alps, centred on the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks, has played an important role in European art and literature.
높고 험하고, 무엇보다 아름다운 산의 대명사, 알프스. 그 대표적인 봉우리와 유럽 최대의 빙하 지형이 바로 융프라우-알레츠-비츠혼 지역이다. 이곳은 유럽의 가장 큰 빙하를 가지고 있으며 U 자형 계곡, 권곡, 빙퇴석과 같은 고대 빙하 지형이 발달되어 있다. 알프스를 형성한 융기와 응압의 지질학적 기록을 제공하며, 알프스 산맥의 생물다양성을 대표하며 식물 진화의 우수한 예라고 할 수 있다. 빙산 고유의 여러 가지 지형을 지니고 있는 유럽 최대의 빙산을 포함한다.
