신선하고 독특한 음악으로 60년대 세계 대중음악을 장았댔던 전설적 그룹 비틀즈 그리고 그 전설적 명성을 뒤로하고 화려한 무대가 아닌 민중 시위 현장에서 모습을 드러내기 시작한 존 레논! 비틀즈 이후, "Gove peace a chance!" 라는 슬로건 아래 음악과 반전 현화 시위 운동을 통해 미국으로 대변되는 기득권 세력의 권력횡포에 정면 승부했던 존 레논의 긴박하고 드라마틱했던 시간을 기록한 흥미진진한 다큐멘터리 영화.
존 레논과 그의 활동에 대해 이야기하는 수 많은 사람들. 데이비드 리프와 존 쉐인펠드 감독은 <존 레논 컨피덴셜>을 단지 역사적 사건만을 나열하는 식의 다큐멘터리 영화에 그치는 것이 아니라 당시 존 레논과 함께 시대를 살았던 다양한 인사들의 생생한 증언을 택해 가장 현실적인 존 레논의 진실에 한 발짝 더 다가선 다큐멘터리 영화로 완성시켰다.
<존 레논 컨피덴셜>을 만들기 위해 2005년 4월 이미 존 싱클레어와 인터뷰를 마친 데이비드 리프와 존 쉐인펠드 감독은 2005년 7월 본격적으로 <존 레논 컨피덴셜> 제작 과정에 착수한다. 두 감독은 당시 FBI 요주의 대상이었던 안젤라 데이비스 교수, 블랙팬더당의 리더 바비 씰, 이피 멤버였던 스튜 앨버트, 뉴욕계 푸에르토리코인 단체 ‘영 로드’의 대변인이자 방송인인 제랄도 리비에라 등 존 레논을 알고 있거나 함께 사건을 겪었던 주변 인물들의 인터뷰부터 시작한다.
그리고 존 레논을 감시하는 임무를 맡았던 두 명의 전직 FBI요원들과 닉슨 대통령의 수뇌부였던 G. 고든 리디와 존 딘, 1972년 선거 당시 닉슨의 라이벌이었던 민주당 후보 조지 맥거번까지 두 감독은 존 레논을 감시하던 당시 정부 쪽 인사들의 인터뷰까지 화면에 담아낸다. 뿐만 아니라 인터뷰 후 ‘존 레논이나 그의 음악에 대해 전혀 모른다’라고 고백하기까지 한 전 뉴욕 주지사 마리오 쿠오모를 인터뷰, 존 레논이 미국에서 일련의 사건을 겪었을 당시 정부의 입장이나 정치적 상황까지 가장 객관적으로 존 레논과 당시 사건에 접근한다.
마지막으로 존 레논과 그가 말하고자 했던 진실을 누구보다도 잘 이해하고 있는 존 레논의 동반자 오노 요코에 이르기까지 데이비드 리프 감독과 존 쉐인펠드 감독은 모든 인터뷰를 직접 따내며 2006년 겨울까지 영화를 위한 다양한 인사들의 주요한 인터뷰를 확보했다.

60년대 영국이 낳은 최고의 그룹 비틀즈(Beatles)의 역사는 1955년 존 레논(John Lennon)이 쿼리맨(The Quarrymen)이라는 밴드를 창단하면서부터 시작된다. 밴드 창단 1년 후 존 레논은 폴 메카트니( Paul McCartney)와 만나게 되고 이후 폴 메카트니와 조지 해리슨(George Harrison)이 차례대로 가입하며 트리오를 형성하게 된다. 그 후 밴드명을 여러 번 바꾸다가 실버 비틀즈(Silver Beatles)를 거쳐 링고 스타(Ringo Starr)가 합세하며 지금의 비틀즈(Beatles)란 밴드 명칭으로 대중음악의 역사를 새로 쓰기 시작했다.

이번에 출시되는 ''존 레논 - 컴 투게더''는 존 레논의 삶과 음악을 기리기 위해 2001년 뉴욕의 라디오 시티 뮤직 홀에서 가진 공연이다. 데이브 매튜스(Dave Matthews), 신디 로퍼(Cyndi Lauper), 알라니스 모리셋(Alanis Morissette), 스톤 템플 파일럿(Stone Temple Pilots), 케빈 스페이시(Kevin Spacey)등 정상급 아티스트들이 출연해 비틀즈와 존 레논의 명곡들을 들려주고 있다.

대중음악 역사상 최고의 명반으로 꼽히는 ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band’를 비롯하여 ‘Revolver’, ‘Rubber soul’, ‘Abbey Road’, ‘White Album’ 등 비틀즈의 모든 앨범들은 명반 여부를 따지는게 무의미할 정도로 음악이 시도할 수 있는 모든 걸 다 보여 주었다. 앨범 ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band’ 발표 후 레너드 번스타인(Leonard Bernstein)이 클래식이 보여줄 수 없는 걸 비틀즈는 보여 주고 있다고 한 유명한 일화를 언급하지 않더라도 비틀즈는 대중음악과 고전음악등 장르를 불문하고 새로운 음악세계를 보여준 신화였다.
하지만 비틀즈 음악의 핵심이랄 수 있는 존 레논과 폴 메카트니의 불화가 심해지고 설상 가상으로 오노 요코(Ono Yoko)까지 가세하며 멤버들간의 불신이 더 심화되며 위대한 그룹 비틀즈의 역사는 74년 12월 30일 그 막을 내리게 된다. 비틀즈 해체 후 존 레논은 음악 활동 외에도 반전 운동등 많은 정치적 캠페인 활동을 하다 80년 12월 8일 마크 데이비드 채프만(Mark David Chapman)의 총격에 파란만장한 인생 여정을 마치게 된다. 이번에 출시될 타이틀 ‘John & Yoko’s Year of Peace’는 존 레논이 비틀즈 해체 후 세상을 바꾸려고 행한 반전 평화 운동의 다큐멘터리 필름으로 음악 활동외의 존 레논 사상의 또 다른 축을 볼 수 있는 귀중한 영상자료가 될 것이다.
