Info: Claudio Abbado¡¯s artistic credo is: "The composer always has the last word, not the conductor". This modest but exceptional musician (born in 1933 in Milan) has for years been among the most internationally acclaimed conductors. As Herbert von Karajan¡¯s successor, he took over direction of the Berlin Philharmonic. His work with this major orchestra, as well as with the two ensembles he founded, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, is the focus of this DVD documentary by Paul Smaczny. It portrays the maestro not only in artistic work with ¡®his¡¯ three orchestras, but also draws on commentary by instrumentalists, soloists, producers and colleagues such as Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez. An extraordinarily diverse and many-layered portrait is painted of this world-class conductor, also sensitively revealing the human being behind the role.
