토마스 햄슨(파우스트), 그레고리 쿤테(메피스토펠레스) 외/ 필립 조르당/ 취리히 오페라

▶ 괴테의 파우스트에 기초한 부조니 최후의 미완성 오페라
부조니의 오페라 ‘파우스트 박사’는 작곡가가 사망할 시점에 미완성작으로 남아있었다. 페루치오 부조니 1924년 58세의 많지 않은 나이로 사망했는데, 스스로 ‘진정한 걸작’이 될 것이라고 자부하고 있던 ‘파우스트 박사’를 미처 완성하지 못한 상태였다. 미완성 부분들인 헬렌의 등장장면과 파우스트의 마지막 모놀로그는 부조니가 1차 대전을 피해 취리히에서 망명생활을 하던 시절부터 그와 함께했었던 애제자 필립 야나흐가 완성하였다. 야나흐가 완성한 버전은 1925년 드레스덴에서 프리츠 부시의 지휘로 초연되었다. 1980년대에 들어와서 지휘자 영국 지휘자 안소니 보몽이 새롭게 발견된 부조니의 스케치를 기초로 새로운 버전의 ‘파우스트 박사’를 재구성하여 1985년 볼로냐에서 이를 초연하기도 했지만, 2006년 취리히 오페라 하우스 무대에서 펼쳐졌던 본 공연은
야나흐 버전을 사용한 것이다.

Doktor Faust remained a fragment at the time of the composer’s death. Busoni died in 1924, unable to complete what he himself described as his “state masterpiece” ? an opera to which he had a deep personal attachment. The missing scenes from the score ? the appearance of Helen and Faust’s closing monologue ? were completed by his pupil, Philipp Jarnach, whom Busoni had become acquainted with during his period in exile in Zurich. In this form the opera was given its first performance in Dresden in 1925. Then in the 1980s the conductor Anthony Beaumont came across previously undiscovered sketches by Busoni and produced a new version of Doktor Faust, which was premiered in Bologna in 1985. The current recording uses the Jarnach score.
